Truth in Ash

Truth in Ash

Though not the main character, Elena features as the lover that Franz tries to re-connect with after the war. She has left for Israel and marries a Jew making a new life for herself in the newly formed Israel. She returns to Europe to testify during Franz's post-war trial in 1972.

We see her in a different context as an old woman meeting her friend Leah. Having been told of her cancer, she confesses her story to her friend, not knowing that Leah herself had a connection to Mihael Rosenthal. We hear how Elena returned to Europe, to testify for Franz in his war trial in 1972. She views her visit as a discharge of her debt to Franz for having saved her sister. Through this confession, Elena learns of franz's visit to Hungary and assumes that he had a part in the murderous transports.
