When visiting Israel, I was disappointed to find it so modernized. Growing up we bought oranges as 'Jaffa Orange', but you will no longer find an orange grove in Yafo as it is now known. The cities of Tel Aviv and Bethelehem and Nazareth are urban aglomerations far from the romantic notions that I arrived with. In the book, the orange holds an important significance particularly for the Jewish population of Israel. In the book, Elena's first experience of arriving in her new country is the Kibbutz life where the enticing scent of orange blossom remains a powerful memory of her rebirth after the Holocaust.
